UNITED WATER RAHWAY URGES CONSERVATION

Heat Wave Prompts Request For Reduced Outdoor Water Usage

Rahway – United Water Rahway and City of Rahway officials are urging customers to conserve water and cut back on outdoor usage during this heat wave.

"We were able to meet our customers’ water needs over the hot Fourth of July weekend," said Jim Glozzy, United Water General Manager. "However, because of the heat wave, we are urging our customers to use water wisely. With scorching temperatures expected to continue and no significant rainfall predicted, voluntary conservation will help us preserve our water supplies. In addition, taking these steps now should help reduce the potential for greater, mandatory restrictions."

United Water is asking customers to reduce outdoor water usage and, more specifically, to modify lawn watering times. "For customers who feel they must water their lawns, we are asking them to do so between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m." said Glozzy." Setting their sprinklers for the early evening hours for the duration of this heat wave will help us to meet heavy demand."

According to Glozzy, lawn irrigation systems substantially increase water demand. Just one lawn irrigation system uses about the same amount of water as five households. Outdoor water demands can result in up to 50 percent more water use throughout the United Water system.

"This is also a good time to remind customers that our ET program is an effective way to have a healthy lawn without wasting water," said Glozzy. "Short for EvapoTranspiration, ET uses scientific weather data to determine exactly when and how long to water the lawn."

For information on ET or additional conservation tips, call customer service at 1-800-422-5987 or visit www.unitedwater.com.

Save Water Outside

  • Use a broom, not a hose, to clear debris from sidewalks.
  • Set your lawn mower one notch higher. Longer grass allows less evaporation.
  • Sprinkle the lawn, not the pavement.
  • Water the lawn only when needed, and between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.
  • Make sure your hose has a shut-off nozzle.
  • Cover your pool to reduce evaporation.
  • Wash your car with soap and water from a bucket.
