Tree planting program
begins
Following the removal of some 1,800 trees from public and
private property in Rahway as part of the joint state and
federal government efforts to combat the invasive Asian
longhorned beetle, the first of several tree plantings began in
Rahway this month with the planting of approximately 300 trees
in Rahway’s Fourth Ward, which was particularly hard hit by the
destructive pest. 75 amelanchier, little leaf linden and
Douglas fir trees were planed planted along Clark, Stockton and
Witherspoon Streets as well as Howard Field following
consultations with the Department of Public Works and Fourth
Ward Councilman Dave Brown. The U.S. Department of Agriculture
and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will
be planting additional trees in Rahway’s First and Fourth Wards
in the spring and fall of 2006 and 2007.
These trees will complement the 150 trees that will be planted
citywide next month as part of the “Greening Union County”
program provided by the County of Union.
