CITY RESIDENT PULLS MOTORIST FROM RIVER

Members of the Rahway Fire and Police Departments were assisted by the Rahway Emergency Squad, Union County Police and members of the United States Coast Guard this morning to assist a motorist whose car ended up in the chilly waters of the Rahway River.

The driver is a 28 year-old Newark resident who veered off the road and into the river in the vicinity of East Hazelwood Avenue and Routes 1 & 9 shortly after 7:20 a.m.  She exited the vehicle and was helped ashore by Rahway resident William Thomas, a coworker of the motorist at the Woodbridge Developmental Center in Avenel.  She was taken to Rahway Hospital where she was treated and released.  The vehicle was pulled from the water around 12:30 p.m.

Firefighter Ronald Toth, right, adjusts a floating boom placed around the sunken automobile while Firefighter Chris O’Carroll, left, pilots his boat, which was docked nearby at the Rahway Yacht Club.
Firefighters John Fleischman, left, and Thomas Schimmel, Jr., right, monitor floating debris from the city’s rescue boat.
