WALKING PATROLS RETURN DOWNTOWN

RAHWAY – Mayor James Kennedy has announced that Rahway police officers have begun to monitor downtown on foot each day as part of the Police Department’s new walking patrol.

Officers have been reassigned from the former Community Assistance Team and will be patrolling the central business district between 7:30 am and 8 p.m.  They will be supplemented with bicycle patrols in the spring.

“Merchants, shoppers and residents have been asking for a walking patrol officer downtown for quite some time, and I’m pleased that we were able to work together towards a solution,” said Kennedy.  “This marks the return of the ‘beat cop’ downtown for the first time in many years and will help strengthen the bonds between our downtown and our public safety professionals.  I’m optimistic that it will lead to safer streets and a higher quality of life.”
