RAHWAY –
Mayor James Kennedy
announced this week that city code enforcement officers will be
targeting numerous properties in Rahway in violation of
municipal building maintenance codes as part of the city’s 2006
“Spring Cleanup.”
Code enforcement officers will be out in force this spring
asking property owners to keep their homes, buildings and lots
clean, safe and free of debris. For example, residents are
reminded that abandoned or unused cars
must be properly stored in a garage and not left to rust in
driveways and lots, and grass must be kept under 10” in height.
Any unsafe and / or unsightly conditions on or around buildings
must also be repaired. Violators can face monetary fines if not
corrected.
According to the Mayor, the city receives dozens of complaints
each month from property owners concerned about code violations
in their neighborhood.
“Maintaining our property is at the heart of any quality of
life initiative,” said Kennedy. “Keeping our homes and
businesses in good condition raises property values, reduces the
potential for crime and instills a sense of pride in our
neighborhoods. We have a responsibility as property owners to
maintain our properties.”
The Mayor added that the city offers financial assistance for
homeowners who are unable to afford the cost of major home
improvements through community development grants, and
low-interest and deferred loans. For more information on the
city’s home improvement program, call (732) 827-2193.
“The cost of most of this work is minimal,” said Kennedy,
“requiring only some elbow grease. Making that investment in
your home or business is a sound one that will pay off for both
property owners and our entire city.” |
