WATER CUSTOMERS URGED TO
CONSERVE
Voluntary odd-even lawn watering is encouraged
RAHWAY —Following
several weeks of warm temperatures and below-average rainfall,
the City of Rahway is urging customers to use water wisely
throughout the rest of the summer. According to Nadine Leslie,
operations manager of United Water Rahway, customer demand for
water has increased significantly in the last month.
“Because of the prolonged dry
spell during July and August, water levels in the Rahway River,
the City’s principal source of water, are extremely low with
demand for outdoor use increasing,” Mayor James Kennedy stated.
“While mandatory restrictions remain a possibility, at this time
we are requesting that our residents and businesses take
voluntary steps to reduce their usage,” he continued.
“We’re asking customers to use
water wisely, both indoors and outdoors,” said Leslie. “Simple
measures like checking for leaks or using household appliances
only to wash full loads will help reduce the demand for water.
These are prudent practices which will help conserve a precious
resource while helping us maintain water pressure during time of
heavy demand.
The most effective way to
conserve water, according to Leslie, is by following a voluntary
odd-even lawn-watering schedule. Just one lawn irrigation system
uses about the same amount of water as five households. As a
result, outdoor water demands can result in up to 40 percent
more water use in summer months.
Under the odd-even lawn watering system:
By following
this odd-even system, customers can still maintain a healthy,
green lawn while helping to improve water pressure throughout
the town. Tips on saving water both indoors and outdoors are
