REMEMBERING 9/11/01: Rahway gives thanks for those who
respond in love & duty
The
City of Rahway is planning a week of public events in remembrance
of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and as gratitude for
the many public safety officials and volunteers who aided the
recovery efforts in New York, Washington, Pennsylvania and Rahway.

The
Rahway F.M.B.A. Local #33 will be will be playing the
Brick Township Police Department in a benefit softball
game for Cystic Fibrosis Research in honor of the
Sandhurst family. The
game will be held at First Energy Park in Lakewood.

There
will be an open prayer vigil until 12 noon at the First
Presbyterian Church (1731 Church Street).

Churches
throughout Rahway will begin ringing their bells to
commemorate the one-year anniversary when the first jet
struck the World Trade Center’s north tower.
Bells will also be rung at 9:02, 9:45, 10:03, 10:05
and 10:28 am to correspond with the second jet striking
the south tower, the crash of Flight 77 into the Pentagon,
the crash of Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, the collapse of
the south tower and the collapse of the north tower,
respectively.

Fire Department, Rahway
Police Department and Rahway
Hospital will be conducting a blood drive at Fire
Headquarters (1300 Main Street) from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
and from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

The County
of Union, along with the City of Rahway, the NY/NJ
Baykeeper and TRC
Omni Corporation will be beginning its “Plant a
Park” program in the new waterfront park along the
Rahway River near Union and Allen Streets.
Volunteers are needed to help plant natural flora
in the 4-acre park. To

Rahway Housing Authority and Arts Guild of Rahway will be
holding a free “Celebrate America” picnic at Kennedy
Apartments for residents and invited guests, located at
224-250 West Grand Avenue.
Musical entertainment will be provided.

The Arts
Guild of Rahway will begin its showing of “9/11: The
Artists Respond.” Admission
is free; this exhibit is sponsored by Merck
& Co. There will be an opening reception on September 15 at 1:00
pm.

There
will be a public remembrance ceremony at the Rahway Fire
Department headquarters, located at 1300 Main Street.
The attendees will then proceed north on Main
Street to City Hall, where the new police monument will be
dedicated.

Zion
Lutheran Church, located at the corner of Elm and
Esterbrook Avenues, will be holding a thanksgiving service
for all those who served their nation on and after Sept.
11, 2001.
